The Road to Spring

As I’m walking down the bumpy pothole covered street, The whisper of the wind gently blows it’s breath across my face, The rays of the sun embracing me There’s the faint sound of laughter in the distance, Made by some children, playing till their heart’s content. The black, hairy canine cantering ahead, pulls me Along the long wavy roads filled with history And stories of an old peaceful past. I pass a small stream, flowing as far as the eyes can see. The smell of spring is in the air, the mix of grass, soil, flowers… Life, pouring into me like never before. Every once in a while I hear the soft crunching of tires Rotating across the rocky surface, then dying away as it passes me. I feel as if I could go on forever; keeping up a brisk pace, just me and my dog. We stop to let her have a drink at the edge of the stream. She laps up the cool, crisp water with her tongue, Panting every few sips to catch her breath. After a while we continue, passing a couple other far Off cousins of hers and exchanging a few greetings. It’s sometime in the evening and the sun is just Barely peaking over the freshly budding trees and evergreens, yet It is as bright and warm as a late summer’s day. We continue on for a bit and after a while turn around. We pass the stream we stopped at for the drink and The houses where we met the other dogs, but they were gone now. It is just me, her and the road with hundreds of years of history beneath, Of the wars fought on this soil, and of the animals watching us from the woods, grass and sky… and of the insects and birds all around us. They had been here long before us, long before the roads, And the houses and some even before this very stream. Before going home we take one last breath, Of the now cool, crisp, summery breeze; one last smell Of the fresh flowers, soil and grass; we listen one last Time to the whisper of the wind, the birds, the insects and Feel the warm sun beating ever so lightly upon our faces, one last time From way out there beyond millennia. We take one last step, off the pothole filled road into our house, Thinking, About tomorrow’s adventure, and of the new, gentle Heart warming feeling of, Spring, in the air.
