The Rock

A rock sits in a stream.

Untouched, until your hand gently picks it up.

The rock seems insignificant.

Look too far and it looks insignificant.

Study it.

Look closely and notice every crevice and curve.

Smooth.

Jagged at the edges.

Rounded.

Grainy.

Small.

Scratches.

Grey flecks.

There it sits.

Resting in your palm.

However, these were simply physical qualities.

Did you mention the history?

Being tossed day by day by passerby

Into valleys

Into roads

Into houses

Into driveways

Until it landed in this very stream

Where it sat day by day by the stream

With the sun beating down

The water slowly eroding particles away

People are like rocks.

We tend to judge by appearance first.

And describe using physical qualities.

Making assumptions

Never thinking about the history

The struggles

The milestones

The dreams.

Every person has their own story.

Just like every rock.

You just have to listen.
