Roll Initiative

The sun sets swiftly

Too swiftly

Hidden from my perch in the rafters

I spy a dark haired monster below

3

He sees me too

Shouting to his companions

He points straight at me

I bolt for the door

12

I make it out the front door

Enemies in tow

Sprinting for the well-lit city

I feel them gaining on me

15

Whipping around to face them

I trip one ruffian

Face-first

Into the road

Another charges to face me

3 again

I take the punch

Rolling with it

Still dropping like a sack of potatoes

As I go to stand back up

I toss a pinch of sand into his face

14

The sand blinds him and I dive into bushes

8

Hidden in foliage

I see my target approach

20

Rising like a shadow

I strike my target

Defeating him in one blow

I feel victory surge through me like caffeine

After too many espressos

Making my way back to reality

I think

If only real life was just about reacting to dice

Then maybe I’d be better

Thinking harder

Why can’t I have a +4 in taking care of loved ones?

Why can’t I have proficiency in making sure they’re okay?

Why can’t I have a bonus to willpower?

Thinking harder

Life is random

Like dice

How I react is what’s important

Waking up

I hear two words:

“Roll initiative”
