Roots and Branches and Applesauce

I used to hug my favorite tree Down there around the roots and moss And drink my juice box through a straw With Oreos and applesauce And then I held it round the trunk The scratchy bark beneath my hands And dreamed about a fairytale Of magic and of far-off lands One day I reached a slender branch Swung back and forth in summer air And never thought of climbing up Or of the view I’d have from there I placed my hand upon a limb To hoist myself up onto it And glanced up at the canopy I knew I was not far from it And now I stand upon that branch And force myself to reach and strain But all I wish is to become The girl with applesauce again
