From the Ropes

From the Ropes

Friendship

It was so much more

Than friendship

Yet I spent so long

Trying to understand what it was

Your mind is a mystery and

Your heart is a void

Yet your rope

Was the closest thing

I felt to home

You held the red flags

Behind your back

Out of sight

And you offered me

Your lies, your kisses

I had no idea

A person could be so

Calculating, yet so comforting

Of an actor all the same

My circle became smaller

Until my entire world

Became centered

Around you

And as much as you were

Pulling me in

You were pushing me away

And I didn’t know what to do

So I held on

Giving you the only thing

I had to offer

My broken heart

Thrown to the ground

So carelessly

Just so long enough for me to

Pick it back up,

Put it back into your hands

Because you were all I had left

How many times did I stay

Because I loved you?

A broken love

Is not real love

My thirst drove me towards

The mirage of your appearance

Bring me someone

Whose friendship is real

Who is not ashamed

Of a date

When I’m away

I will hold

The value of a thought

A seat in the cushions

Of their heart

Never is there a need

To inquire why we’re away

To ask for the password

Or secrets

I can dance through

The streets

Without a care in the world

And he won’t even think

To tell me no

I can smile at a man

Have lunch with a friend

Disloyalty

Won’t even be a suggestion

I’ll ask about him

He can ask about me

We’ve let go of the bricks

Of hesitancy

We’re strong in ourselves

Strong in each other

Interested and respectful

Attraction is not fear

The security of your prison

Of which I’ve finally broken free

Becomes the security

Of mine and his feet

As we stand tall together
