Ruminations
Remember that bed and breakfast we went to?
With the white sheets that scratched your skin,
The hotel service that always left the cart on the left side in the hallway,
The frosted, broken glass of the windows ushering in the cold air outside,
The fruit that was always riddling with black, unforgiving flies,
Don’t you remember…honey?
Hold still the clock
Measuring us
Our time together
Seconds
And minutes
And then hours
Send them flying away
Backwards
Flying into a nowhere land
Where we can still be together
We lay in the enfolding darkness
Darkness, darkness, darkness
Hidden we were beneath the bed sheets
When you held me
I didn’t feel you anymore
I couldn’t touch you without feeling someone else
At night, your silhouette was of a stranger
One that I could not believe I let into my bed
But we didn’t know it would be like that
That I’d hate the way you put a strand of your hair
Between your rough lips and nibble.
How your voice reached an octave when you spoke to someone important
(Your voice never reached that tone with me).
The pain I felt when I realized that we were growing apart
Two different people on two unjoining paths
Barely connected by an unwinding red string.
So today, I am here,
Again.
In the hotel that tore our binding hearts apart,
Where our souls were broken,
In the heartless shade of the trees.
I was blinded by you.
That morning I went to the dining room,
Ordered a coffee,
Read for two hours.
The leaves bristled in the wind
As the birds sang their chorus
Hidden in the lofty trees.
I could feel you in my heart
Your presence unwelcome as I ruminated
Over our relationship
