The Run

My heart beats against the inside of my chest as my body writhes to break free of its control. The blood pumping its way through my veins creates an icy sensation over powering the pain that takes hold with every pound against the concrete. Boom. Boom. Boom. The rhythm of my feet hitting the pavement is music to my ears and hope for my soul. Pressing forward is the only option. My lungs catch as a new wind picks up. Fire and ice. Opposites. Something I was very accustomed to. My mind fighting my body. The weather testing my perseverance. My feet fighting the concrete. My own body fighting itself. As the cold sinks in and I draw near to collapsing, in the distance the finish line comes into view. My hero. All of one mile away. Adrenaline kicks in saving my pride, body, and soul from devastation. As I cross that holy line everything I have worked so hard for hits me like a brick wall, falling to my knees taking in all that I have accomplished. Today the 5k became mine.
