Safe Haven
Safe Haven
We all crave.
Whether it be money, fame, or even love.
I craved knowledge.
As wide-eyed, enthusiastic 3rd grader, I loved school.
I woke up every morning wondering what was in store for the day.
Little did I know, that one day could change everything.
Each day was broken up into certain parts.
We would start the day crunching our numbers,
Then on to reliving the past through recollections of heroes,
Or unleashing our inner mad scientist,
Before finally exploring the world of books.
My favorite subject was always Literature.
Whether we read a book, or learned about the various writing styles,
I was always amazed by the never ending expanse of literature.
That particular day in class we were learning about poetry.
We got into groups and wrote about anything and everything.
From the blue of the sky,
To the orange fur on my cat,
All things were written.
The following week I found myself in the library,
Checking out book after book by every poet I could find.
Although it was poetry aimed at an audience of 9 year-olds,
It did nothing less of changing my life.
Sadly, in that time, finding and discovery poetry was just a phase.
As soon as it came, it left too.
But sometimes, rediscovering things have a blessing in themselves.
We all reach a low point in our lives.
It seemed though I had reached mine.
I felt like I was standing at a cross-road,
Alone, frightened, and confused.
Where to go?
Who to turn to?
What to do?
That is when I found it.
Poetry.
It was the light at the end of the darkest tunnel.
It became the outlet to release my deepest thoughts, fears, and concerns.
There were no boundries or limitations.
Just me and my mind,
Going wherever,
Being whomever,
Believe and dreaming whatever.
Writing poetry became my escape,
From a world that was consuming me.
It became my safe haven.
