Salt on a Wound
Her name is Worthless.
That is what the World calls her –
That is what she calls herself –
Because that is all they both can see.
Her heart is lost in her childhood dreams
That died away with her ignorance
Of all the things that could have been
When the world told her
Of all the things that are.
The World leaves her
To waste away
Into its harsh, sweeping wind
And vengeful fire;
To never be touched,
To never be loved,
To never feel the company that the World strives for,
To always be the company the World is left with.
She is trapped
Like words on a page,
Not yet able to see
The blank spaces between the lines.
The World has only shown her
What is written on the page,
Not of the words she has yet to write.
Hope shines behind her,
But she does not turn to meet it
Because if she turns from the darkness of the World,
It will envelop her
And that is her greatest fear.
