Satellite Child
I used to swing on the swings during recess everyday,
singing songs of the past.
Watching the kids on the blacktop gleefully play,
monkeybars, hopscotch, basketball, games that were fast.
I was like a satellite watching over them.
Swinging so high in the light of day.
Head above the clouds.
Naive to the troubles life could undertake,
capturing the images of play.
Overtime an asteroid hit me,
“Friends” I had didn’t fit me.
They were unstable and spat fire at each other.
I was in the middle, watching over.
I felt alone in the universe,
I yearned for a new verse.
Swinging grew tiring by elementary’s end.
The songs I sang became a broken record.
I grew old of this form throughout the years bend,
so I decided to yank out the cord.
I jumped off the swing.
I demanded a new.
In return I got another level.
But deep down I knew,
I was still a tiny fragile satellite.
Another asteroid hit me.
“Friends” I had didn’t fit me.
I stayed back and watched the destruction.
I needed to try to avoid this obstruction.
I needed an escape,
This is not my shape.
Like a caged-bird I was, who can only overlook the rest,
trapped behind steel.
The predators would draw close to my crest.
Looking for a meal.
Once more I yearned for an escape from this mess.
I needed to find a key.
To fly away from this distress.
In time, I found it.
I found the key hidden deeply within my heart.
It was not in the crowds of people who roam this earth where I found a new start,
but it was within me and my gentle soul that I shouldn’t part.
Through this revelation I built a new castle in great serenity;
way above the clouds.
Where passion and love shall guide me for an eternity.
Where it’s carefully guarded by courageous soldiers who will watch over and dare not betray.
No more, shall I take of people using me for their own gain and listen to them cause wars.
No more, must I feel like I’m helpless prey.
No more, must I feel like I’m trapped behind bars.
Like a phoenix I was reborn and now I stand stronger than ever.
Spreading my wings high and wide.
This is my kingdom I crafted that never may sever.
I found my own haven and I no longer need to watch it from the outside.
