Saving a Life
Getting over one's fears
Is a challenging task
One of my own has occured over the years
And it will not be the last
A couple days before Christmas, I went to a family event
Where my uncle collapsed, not breathing
In just a few seconds, which felt like torment
I had to decide what to do, while everyone was seething
All eyes were on me as I was fighting an internal battle
In one swift motion my assessment began
I looked from head to toe, then near his clavicle
Then at his chest, and I came up with a plan
I started compressions, 30 to 2
Then stopped, looked at his breathing, and some family jumped in
And then I continued
Until the ambulance arrived, and took over, looking at his skin
They stabilized, they took him, and my job was almost done
The EMT came over, and told me I did well
With a big sigh, I realized I had overcome
One of my biggest fears since training, and I almost fell
Although it was scary, I managed to overcome my fears,
Used the training I have learned to save a life,
And for many more years,
I will continue on this path, and save even more lives.
