Scare Crow
Across the frost that covers the Earth,
the stubble row after row
march with fixed bayonets
Past an old scare crow.
A bleak wind brings his voice to her
the last words of one at loss
“Why do they leave me so alone,
Alone on my wooden cross?”
Who does he answer to when his blood thins out like hay,
When the weight of the sun
blinds sullen eyes with
Rays of dismay.
Stretched out on the pale grass,
A boy and a girl.
Her listening to his labored breath,
His struggle ends
as her voice is heard.
Stretched out underground
A man and his grey world
Saying nothing, never singing,
Giving silence for silence.
A man and a woman with
A last glare of poison and stillness.
