Scars
People often ask me
Why I have so many Scars
And I simply respond
Because I get hurt a lot
Although I never try to be
Someone I'm not
"Why do you get hurt so much?"
And I tell them
It’s because I wear my heart on my sleeve
Some people get it and others simply don’t
That’s how you can tell the heart broken ones
From the people that have ones that won’t
"But, don’t you think they are ugly
Why wouldn’t you make them go away?"
Because they inspire me to fight
And besides, they're all so beautiful
In their own right
As for washing them away
That is something I could never do
My scars are my pain
They are my trips, falls, and mistakes
They remind me that despite it all
I still have a journey to take
So no, my scars?
I will never try to erase
They prove that I’ve been beaten,
Soul crushed and shattered
And all the times I was
Shaken, broken, and tattered
My scars hint at my mortality
And for that I am grateful
Even when people are hateful
I am glad for my humanity
My scars I refuse to hide through cosmetics
Like glasses, hearing aids, or prosthetics
They are apart of me and my work ethic
So I am what I am that is what I can say
But my scars tell you who I am
And how I got that way
So when you look at me now
Don’t take pity or be disgusted
Understand I’m just like you,
All disturbed, hurting, and busted
