Sealskin by the Sea
O'er the coastline, Beyond the horizon,
A wee li'le kingdom and it's under the sea
Way under the shore and down through the caves
A wee li'le kingdom that lives all the selkie
They're beautiful people wit' a secret big
You wouldn't a guessed with them otherwise
They're humans by day and seals by night
And ye can only tell from their eyes
See, I see them, I do, right from the sea
They show up and they will take off 're skin
They'll put it aside for a tad bit t'dry
And they'll look like the rest o' our kin
The women make our men want them for wives,
So what a surprise do we find it t' be
That the men are quite charming and take
Our women by morrow as wives of selkie
All you have to do to make a selkie spouse,
Just don't leave the key that unlocks this chest,
Hide their selkie skin and replace wit' a blouse
Or they'll run back into the waters, the raging tempest
I'm only an old man that lives on a hill
Next to the lupin lady and by the shoreline
I watch from me post as the boats sail by
And you can't mistake the sealskin shine
They can be as kind as can be, or mean,
Really anything like another human
Makes me wonder if the only thing that's diff'rent
Is that they're really good at swimmin'
But it's not like when you take their skin that
They accept their fate as a bride right away
They'll fight for a bit before they decide to quit
And raise the children that come from their stay
Still they'll have them wandering eyes
Looking to the ocean at every little chance
A selkie belongs to sea, take it from me,
Resting their heads in their hands in a trance
O'er the coastline, Beyond the horizon,
A wee li'le kingdom that I know's the selkie
Sometimes I wonder if she's ever in that trance
And me mother is thinking of me
