Seascape

Everyone knows that water is not really blue. The blue is but a reflection of the sky, which is just a reflection of the angles of the drops of water in the atmosphere. But clear is not a color; So we forget the science. So we'll say that water is blue. But what do we say when the water doesn't reflect the sky? Well, then the water is green and purple and black. Imaginary hills are forested with outrageously pink jellyfish and obscenely face-painted sea-clowns. Imaginary valleys are home to roaming herds of flashing silvers, chased by depressingly slow narwhals. And the sky is reflected and redoubled so many times that the anchor fish lights are muffled in purple, and cold coral steeps in emerald. This reflected world is a much more wonderful place. The brain has trouble comprehending the scene. That this is a reflection of a reflection and thus the lie of a lie. And for years we've lived content with our infrequent rainbows. The water lends a more liquid feel to the brilliance of colors. You feel that you could swim for the rest of your life in the simple colors. And that the colors would give you something more than life. This freshness could give anyone anything. Here in the ocean most of our faults are but reflections. Our sadness, our fear is pale, lifeless. Here in the water we are free.
