Season of Change

The snow falls like powdered sugar, The gentle silence, muffled by silver grounds Weaving between the bare branches of trees Like autumn leaves dancing with barely a sound I’ve wrapped myself up in a thick grey coat, Breath curling like praise for the heavens Reaching out to the future, to the me after me The one that exists after here, after now I’ve wanted a structure, an order, a reason To everything that I have done and will do But now with this time of apprehension and tension There’s nothing to do with my hands, No schedule that I can look to The wind needs no pattern The snow needs no schedule to cling to Winter happens when it happens It snows when it desires A cold gust of wind in summer cutting through - - The season need not pretend it's in control That the heat of the sun will simmer till dusk Often times; Things happen because they do With no structure, no order, no rhyme or no must I’ve slid into the passenger seat alongside you The warmth hitting my face in a numbing caress Comforting me from the soft harshness of cold Like the way your smile softens my sharp edges I will travel to a new part of life soon One I may never see you again But I can cherish this moment This feeling This life One I can lock away into my mind And when I am lost, peer in The sound of your soft voice humming new-old tunes Words worn with the nostalgia of lost age Knowing the melody without thinking a thing Using the car, gliding down the road, as our stage Pressing my face to the frosted window Seeing what secrets lie just beyond there A mystery of the unknown That the bare forest will never share It was new; a contentment to know I don’t know And, though curious, letting the questions hang there Soon I will be sitting alone On the road to a place I know not of yet I will feel the warm numbness bloom on my skin, The thrum of an engine welcome me back within I will hum along to the same old songs Only one part of a lost duet But I know, as you know, that life moves on With no structure, no order, no season, And no reason to forget
