Seasons

I was born with a soft and gentle covering around my heart A permeable and open system, freely giving and receiving One in particular filled my entire heart the moment they entered Love was fully and equally given and received, a symbiotic love Yet time brings more than just simple tears and fears Some fill the heart and tear the walls apart Yet the heart, the muscle that it is, repairs It tears apart to then engross itself in a callus like wall While the heart is still tender inside Anyone to enter is met with reactive defenses Emotional responses, defense mechanisms, and distance The one who had filled my heart completely was torn The heart took over to protect, the beloved was overtaken, destroyed Out of fear I still easily outpoured love to everyone Still basking in love by emitting love to others Trying to issue love to those similar; those unable to return love Distressed at the thought of anyone loving in return fully The dread of ever hurting another who reached my defenses Rejecting love to never bear hurting another again so completely The thorns were set around the tower My own needs for affection put to sleep An empty container still trying to pour out to others Lo and behold a hundred years must have passed For lo a prince slipped past the thorns unscarred Using my outpour as a rope to pull themselves in deeper Before they could even catch a scratch they filled the whole castle I could feel myself awakening The pattern of pain did not repeat Love had found a way to slip in unharmed Hope will bring winter to one day slowly kill the thorns You my dear friends, can conquer the thorns You my dear friends, are brave enough to love me You my dear friends, will pay the cost to enter You my dear friends, have taught me Taught me That love always finds a way That what is rough can be made anew That I am worth loving through pain and gain That humanity thrives on the transferring of love That your presence in my solitary heart leaves Permanent footprints to keep my heart company in the lonesome moments Summer is just a memory, You have brought Autumn and Winter to cleanse me, And you bring hope of an oncoming Spring
