Seasons Of Our Breath

Seasons Of Our Breath

by t.a.mayes aka shishyananda

In the winter we burst into the frigid cold

laughing and carrying on with pure joy

scraping a hole through the ice on the windshield

doing donuts in a deserted parking lot

Our breath frozen in the air

In the spring we grudgingly plodded outside

grumbling and muttering, mad at the sky above

rain coming down in buckets, huge drops exploding

upon the ground already soaked with puddles

Our breath whispering curses

In the summer we crashed through the screen door

wrestling and tumbling, pulling hair and other parts

cursing and yelling, rolling down the porch stairs

sprawling out into the green grass

Our breath coming in wheezes

In the fall we bounded out the door and down the porch

dressed in old jeans and sweatshirts, passing the football back and forth as we headed for the schoolyard

a gathering soon in a spirited gridiron battle

Our breaths coming in pants
