Second Best

I can see the way you stare at her,

With desire in your eyes.

The same way I look at you.

You have the look of all the other guys

And just like them you never seem to notice me...

Me.

I’m living in her shadow

A flower that hasn't bloomed

With her around. My love life seems to be doomed,

But what am I to do but sit in this silence.

She's cute,

I hide her: a show of defiance

Am i not as beautiful as her?

As caring

as generous

and kind?

I’m always second best.

And I can finally see why...

I’m jealous of how perfect she is,

How desired and loved,

The spotlight in her glimmering eyes,

Her smile shines like the sun

Her hair,

Glistens like waves of the sea

She’s picture perfect.

Not imperfect like me.

Me.

I help her shine as I live in her shadow.

Friend or foe?

God I don’t know anymore

I can see the way you walk up to her

Rose in hand,

Your intention is easy to understand

My heart’s broken in shambles

I look at the sky up above

I don’t care anymore, there’s no such thing as love

Tears running down my face,

Legs running down the street.

She’s always going to be better,

Better than me.

I see the way you walk defeated

Rose in the trash

Tears in your eyes

Heart turned to ash

In time you look at me,

Scan me with those same eyes

A product of a broken heart,

I see through your disguise

I was always your second choice

And never the first

Never the first...

I’m too humble and kind,

I aspire for a future

With my troubled mind,

I see the way you stare at her, with your beautiful brown eyes,

Your heart, broken

Dream, crushed

It’s the same way I look at you.

I’m alone and forgotten,

Never noticed

Never loved

Never first choice.

I’m always second best.

I think I finally know why.

I’m me...

I don’t need your affection

Your attention and love,

I don’t need your validation

Your support and hugs

I am now my own first,

No longer my last

 I am me.

While you are now my past
