"Second Fig" and "My Respnse"

Safe upon the solid Rock, their ugly houses stand;

Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand.

-- Edna St. Vincent Millay

Oh you poor intellectual mind.

How you often very unkind

Speak of those who on the Rock

Build their ugly homes of muck.

What you have is not thine own,

But rather comes from God’s own Trone.

It may be a palace on the sand,

But where do you go when sea takes land?

When earth’s wild tempest rage and sound,

How will your bright palace stand its ground?

Now safe in their houses warm and dry,

Are the people whom you descry

Smiling, singing where they reside

Upon the Rock, their Savior’s side.
