At Second Glance

This chill rivets my tremors There is something unworldly here Like snippets of a life that isn't mine I can taste the death, it's so near Take one step and I'll have crossed the line Into another dimension that I've known all along But my concentration snaps like a twig So I'm back in a swaying tree That, at second glance, isn't all that strong and now I see My alarm is sounding To inform me of the end It sounds a lot like a gunshot But maybe that's just because it is The bullet is seared with two words It's the one I wasn't willing to take And now I'm just so damn confused Because now you say those words were a mistake This state of limbo is killing me Roasting me like a marshmallow over open flame Your shaky fear is hurting me But, at second glance, I deserve the pain Our relationship will never be the same But, then again, isn't that how it's meant to be? The toxic fumes bubble up from the liquid tar Like the fire's effect on my skin But, at second glance, it's a burning sweet sensation And your insecurities won't get you far But you're scared and I guess I understand
