On Second Thought

THEY LIKED the idea of glamour,

The gold, the grace, the glitter,

The idea that money was key,

That luxury was handed to them,

The thought of being in the moment.

THEY HAD extravagance,

Meaning: the quality of being extravagant,

As in its synonyms: lavishness, profusion, wastefulness,

As in an excess outlay of money,

As in only a few could experience.

THEY WANTED more,

The wealth, the alcohol, the adoration,

To take advantage of opportunities,

Parties to fill their void,

Opulence, luxury, decadence.

THEY BELIEVED they were living a dream,

That they could be oblivious to their mistakes,

To be free from all responsibilities,

They were following the sweet melodies of the rest,

That power was looming in front of them waiting to be claimed.

What THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND was the deceit,

The artificial gold that covered the old and used,

The fake reality that was on repeat daily,

How blinded they were by the party lights,

How expectation was met by disappointment.

BECAUSE what they thought was a simple life was not,

Everything that was done is now felt with regret,

They tried to repeat the past but now can't understand their present,

It was the truth beneath the surface they failed to see.
