Secrets

She clings her secrets close to her chest,

Clutching like tree roots

Bitter whispers grasp the earth that sustains,

That hiss “mine”

Piercing the life that crumbles to rocks, to pebbles.

Criss-crossing like pine needles

Her fingers leave room not for a single blade

Of grass.
