To See The Lights
Stay home, she says
I don't want to be lonely
But mom, I need to leave
I want to dream and sight see and be set free
My love, everything is here for you
What more could you need?
I want independence, I want truth
I want to make something of myself,
Something of this youth
Ah, but my flower you give me strength
Revive my soul when I am weak
I am your mother
Do you understand?
Do not ask to leave this house again
So I searched for a way out
The mold I was pressed to fit in became a shell of chagrin
Wrapped around tight- I thought i'd never see the light
Oh, what should I choose?
The black and white world behind me or the twinkling abyss before me?
It winks at me, and I leap
Out from her grasp and into the deep
I cut of my hair, my former identity
My once-golden locks have found their key
From here I look up at the sun
It centers my world and kisses my cheeks
I can do this, I say
I will dance around this straight line-
Even without a prince of mine
