to see me

the couch was worn, the cushions flat and bursting

and the chairs stiff-backed, the fabric like sandpaper

but it was there that they first accepted me

i was not a "label" to them, no:

in that room, i was simply human

and i found a love which

though silent

was the kindest i had ever felt
