See You

Dear Sister,

I know these words may take a day and night to reach you. I know that the world between us fights the ability to talk. We could walk and meet but we could also phone or tweet, and then there seems no need to move. I know that so much is lost this way.

Maybe not everyday, but being able to see and greet and touch you and would mean so much more to me than 1s and 0s on a screen. Bleeding with likes and emojis when actual emotional spikes aren’t actually communicated.

Maybe the letter will better this listlessness I feel online.

Maybe the time it will take to get there I would have already reminded myself that it isn’t how you talk, its who’s listening and where

Dear sister,

Do you remember?

It must have been in November that I wrote you?

I noted how texting felt like sin when we could interact

I retract that.

Because in chat there’s that possibility to know if they’ve read it

And you can either feel hostility or assurance to see it has been “seen”

But at least you know they got it

Did you get my letter

This you should because the address is longer and the wood used to make it

stronger and the stamp cant be wrong I bought it today

Please say something back

Even in chat

     -N

Dear Sister

Now I know you blow through life

with ease

Pleasing everyone

and seizing opportunities

when they’re ripe

And I hate to pipe up

but I would appreciate

If you could fit on your plate

A moment to mail me

It would help bail

out the loneliness

I know the resources

are hard to gather

But I’d rather read

the same letter

over again

Than skim the same text

I would say see you next time

But it’s best if I say

goodnight

See you at the funeral
