A Seldom Solo Soliloquy
In this flash flood of selfies, I am the first half of a couplet: incomplete.
I do not stand alone:
shifting focus to my partner, I dissolve,
the complementary counterpart of a re-focused frame.
I look to them to present my better profile.
I am the translucent glass tinting their presence,
providing a beneficial contrast.
Their wrapping poses are my filters, as I am theirs,
and I mold myself into an apparition.
I do my best not to stand alone but flashes can be candid.
Traces of vulnerable loneliness are captured in clicks,
left for later visitation.
Protests are no use.
The inevitability of these portraits goads me into looking, and:
The images of my solitary form without protective personnel is jarring.
I am a blatant patchwork of imperfections, without the fade of companionship.
There is frailness in my body,
and unevenness to my skin,
but the lop-sided crinkle of my eyes
seems a smile, not a sin.
Without a flank of friends
I am a single lighthouse -not even 5'3-
perhaps just over 100 pounds, dimunitive.
But perhaps, although alone,
I am not small or unsmooth.
When I do stand alone,
and I will,
I will show you why glass windows are beautiful
because my pieces are different
and
a masterpiece.
