The Self-Dug Hole

People say depression sucks.

They say it drains you of life,

and that’s bad.

But to me depression was a safe place.

I had my little hole that I dug for myself and I was perfectly content inside of it away from people and away from life.

They say you can’t be happy depressed but I was happy being sad, I was happy drained of life.

Maybe I’m a masochist or maybe I’m twisted but I didn’t want to get better, I wanted to stay sad.

I had people trying to help me bringing me ladders and ropes trying their best to pull me out of my hole,

but I didn’t want out.

I was happy being sad.

With time people stopped trying to come to my rescue and finally let me be, just like I had wanted.

It was peaceful in my hole.

But the ground began to shake as my hole began to rise and layers of the earth began unfolding as my emotions flew and bounced around all over the walls of my hole ruining the peace I had finally accomplished.

Suddenly there were these other emotions I was feeling besides sad.

Suddenly I was energetic.

Suddenly I grew hopeful.

Suddenly I was singing songs of joy.

I can see the horizon again.

And I gotta say, it’s not too bad outside my hole.

Now that I’m out there’s nothing that can stop me.
