Self Survival Tool
As the amber sun sets and the breeze cools down,
My listening ears begin to pan around me, on this desolate island of unknown.
To be aware of my vast surroundings,
Whether in a bustling loud transient city, full of smells and honking horns;
Or floating on a catamaran, looking above at contrails in the clouds;
Being crouched in the corner of a closet during a tornadic storm, feeling your ears pop as it goes fleeting by;
Using your debit card at a questionable corner store, for a fresh bagel and coffee;
Feeling your screaming heart in your throat, as you hit your breaks to avoid a crash;
At a moments notice, surroundings change, transform, shift, develop, and reverse;
But your self-reliance, your common sense, inside your spirit awaits to roar;
It takes over, your listening ears are on constant watch;
Your quick thinking purpose, your extension of another breath;
The falling upon oneself, as the self survival tool began before it started, before I knew.
As I sit staring into a tiny flame, striving to keep it alive;
My thought to collect more tinder consumes me, my every will.
The yearn of warmth from a fire sends a message, of comfort and security;
A simple glowing amber, bestows me with a grand presence of perseverance.
Knowing my only survival tool is my own ears, my own eyes, my gut feeling, my intuition, my self reliance;
My battleground may change at a moments notice, the clouds may open up rain on a roaring fire;
But my anticipation, awareness, inkling and will, have started before it ever began, our self survival tool awaits to roar in us, to be our life story.
