A Selfish Heart
My heart’s as selfish as it is oblivious,
/
because it wants your love so badly
/
And, in taking what it can get, it finds only hatred resides in your body
/
Men may cry and experience this pain, calling it heartbreak,
/
But only cowards sit in the dark and wait for their underlying fate
/
I don’t hold a grudge for what you did, but what you didn’t do
/
You took my heart and failed in the end to see it through
/
And you leave no apology letters or notes of guilt;
/
So, yes dear, to feel some prolonged bitterness I do still
/
Seemingly long ago, you stole lipstick from my lips,
/
And for you to do so now would not amount to shit
/
Because you listened to my heart beat in my chest,
/
Having simply listened for a way in like all the rest
/
Many times you would continue pouring into my innocent eyes,
/
Only to taint my naive soul with an abundance of lovely lies
/
They were not shallow and pristine but quite dirty and ugly;
/
You claimed twisted beauty to a puzzle, solution never seen
/
So you tell them all now that you cannot hear me
/
My eyes, my hands, my love; oh, but can you see?
/
You have to have stolen not only my selfish vitality,
But every lasting breath I were willing to breathe
/
These strings, their one and only job to tug on my fragile heart,
/
Have snapped themselves; never to love those willing to tear me apart
/
Yet, here you are, everything I fear
/
a pitiful coward playing by ear
/
I am selfish and I ask more of you every day
/
but would it be so damn bad if for once you decided to stay
