The Separation

Mom and dad separated, the sadness in the air stung When the truth, like a bell, had rung 15 years of marriage down the drain Two hearts swollen in so much pain Divorce didn’t mean an end to love, Just an end to the known, with a forceful shove But mom and dad never moved on The love that was shared was never forgone The love never ended The bond never dented The three beautiful lives created Remind them of the good life plated They never gave up Always took the time to catch up Best friends forever Never had they felt so clever Even with the occasional strife, What will she do when he is no longer in her life? Death came slow and painful He was no longer able Yet, as a relief to all who loved him The immense pain he felt was dim But how will she survive? Will the kids be able to thrive? Life never stops Her problems gather at her feet, like raindrops Wasn’t divorce supposed to be the worst? How could she not have seen this first? Now three kids to raise all on her own And no one there to keep her from feeling alone But she’s a fighter Her children, her igniter She does all she can to protect those kids Even while feeling like her life just skids Doing a job she hates just for the money Laughing along, even though it’s not funny One loving woman struggling through life The pressure, cutting her like a knife Three sad, sad children left without a father Life goes on, but it only gets harder She pretends to be okay As she lives her life, day by day She walks through life with a grief so deep She tries her best not to weep Life is a struggle, but more so without him She tries to keep her head above water and swim She does it for the children, they need her the most For them, she would never dream of giving up her post She makes herself wake every morning Even though her days are boring Her days wear on, weary and sad But she knows she is doing right by the man they called dad The separation is now forever But taken from her heart, he will never She believes she has done wrong But this is an idea that doesn’t belong She may sometimes feel regret and sorrow But she still keeps looking for tomorrow For, if she keeps her head held high, she soon will see There is no child more grateful and happy than me

My dad passed away in September. My parents were divorced in 2005, but were best friends until the day he died. My mom was really having a hard time getting through his death, so I wrote this for her.
