Seperation
You want to hold him –
To take him in your arms and
Crush him to you until he can’t
Breathe anymore.
Oh, but that’s impossible…
There is more than distance involved, after all;
More than location.
There may be steel and wire and concrete that
Separates you,
But that isn’t quite the most important.
No, there is time and agony and misjudgments
And mistakes:
Indeed, the stench of regret is the foulest
Aftertaste.
He’s gone –
Dead, no,
But gone and lost and
Oh, it hurts, it hurts.
Those brown eyes are vague,
Days pass by in a blur and you would love to say
He isn’t on your mind,
But you aren’t one for lying.
He’s there – in favored songs and gentle scents,
Memories abound in the slightest of places.
He’s there – in your blood and in your soul,
A part of you.
“Six days and six years,” you smile bitterly.
“Six days and six years,” that sickening refrain
Rings in your head.
If only that was all there was to separate you.
