Sepia or Black and White?

We are conditioned to be a certain person with no individuality,

Our mentality grows to be a person who we can eventually not recognise.

Our thoughts become one and our souls become nothing because we spend countless hours Believing that we can think for ourselves when in reality; we never have.

Our filters must be destroyed and we must avoid the contradiction that is our lives.

Once our filter comes off we can be us, we can be human, we can be anything we want.

Sepia or Black and white?

It is the media that tells us that we must filter ourselves in every possible way,

Almost every day of our lives we hold back on who we truly are.

So I propose we throw out this belief,

This conditioning that we were taught since we were young.

Take off your filters and let your tongue be your weapon,

Let freedom of speech engulf your body like a tidal wave on a hot summer day,

Let everyone know that we are brave enough to not let them control us no longer in any way.

Our instagrams will now be filled with photos of actual people,

Not some figure behind some sepia screen.

I am not some girl that should worry about offending and being a little obscene.

I make my opinions known and I am more than “Like” on a random photo.

Yes, I have acne and yes, I don’t always look nice,

But I will not pay the price of sacrificing my individuality to a sepia tone.

I will not become someone different on Selfie Sunday,

I will never become one of those “Filter Girls” who's like a drone.

These words may be harsh, but it’s what we need for the youth of today.

So who am I?

I can’t answer that yet, for I’m still figuring that out, too.

But I can guarantee you that I know what I am not.
