A Serving Camp #YOWO

#youonlywriteoncescholarshipslam

#YOWO

The campers are here

The campers are here

On a hot summer day

Volunteers make their way

With many shouts and claps

Campers arrive with luggage and straps

Wheelchairs rolling here and there

My role was to be there for their care

Swimming, fishing, and canoeing all day

And a high ropes course was along the way

A week of special treats

Doing things not done in normal weeks

Seven days to be treated like queens or kings

What a week of special things!

A smile of joy on a camper’s face

As he flew down a slide in his very first race

The first fish caught brings a surprised look

Even as it’s soon served by the cook!

After the camp, my wants I set aside

And realized how often I had lived in pride.

Turned my focus on others

As was said by our mothers

I now know it’s more fulfilling

And also very thrilling

To freely give in life

Than to receive and live in strife.
