Set the captives free

Spoken words

At times they are futile

Feeble

Unable to express our thoughts

Our hurts

Our confusion

Our deepest secrets.

And so there they lie, trapped inside

No way of escape

No chance of relief

And while our hearts cry within us

And our thoughts yearn for freedom

We smile.

And hope that tomorrow brings better things than yesterday.

But then we discover

Written words

Vibrant, powerful, alive

And those ideas and emotions

beating against our souls like rain against the windows

Break free

and pour out

and we feel new again.
