Set Us Free

The sun is heating up my back, Reflecting off the scars. I can't lose focus or get off track, Or I'll soon be seeing stars. I must pick cotton quicker than ever, For my big white Master. Unfortunately I'm not too clever And I just can't pick any faster. There's more colored folk out there, With a fate the same as me. And with my soul I plead and declare: Someone please set us free. There's rumors that the North will win This alleged civil war. I want to help, but because of my skin That's too much to hope for. And so I pray every night That the North will conquer all. I pray and pray with all my might That slavery will hit a wall. Until that day I lose my hair And dream of how to flee, And with my soul I plead and declare: Someone please set us free.
