Seven-Year-Old Wishes

When I was seven years old

You could say I was a little naïve.

And when Christmastime came along,

Naturally I didn’t find it hard to believe

(In Santa Claus, that is).

I knew all about Santa

And his magic for granting wishes,

So I made my very own Christmas list,

Though I may have been a little too ambitious.

Of all the things I could’ve written

I scribbled down world peace.

I didn’t want new boots or a shiny new toy,

I wanted the cruelty to cease.

When I was seven years old

You could say I was a little naïve,

But even at that young age

I understood what it meant to grieve.

It wasn’t my parents that taught me,

It just stemmed from my heart.

Now whenever I look back to that moment,

I know that was the start.

It was the start to the makings of who I am today

And I know that right then, I was doing something right.

I’ve grown to be compassionate and kind,

Making sure to always look towards the light.

Now that I’ve grown a little older

I seem to have gone astray

I don’t know what my purpose is in life

Or whether I’m going the right way.

Nevertheless,

There’s one thing I know for sure.

I have a warm heart;

One that’s loving and pure.

I don't usually see much potential in myself,

But I do have to keep in mind

That my sensitivity is not something to be ashamed of,

Because it's a sign of my sympathy for mankind.

When I was seven years old

You could say I was a little naïve

But my heart was in the right place,

And it's helped me realize that there are no limits to what I can achieve.
