Shackles of Conformity

“Everyone is beautiful in their own way”

Or that’s what I’ve heard.

Then why am I lead astray

And so affected by mere words?

I’ve been told I’m not pretty

From things I build my life upon.

I look in the mirror to find pity

And my self-love, slowly, is gone.

Struggling to find a happy medium

Between beautiful and acceptance

I truly have no freedom

And my individuality will keep its distance

I buy the latest trends

And wear the latest fashions,

But how can I fit in

When no one knows my passions?

Influenced by the media

Brainwashing my appearance.

Beauty magazines are my encyclopedia

And I have no perseverance.

Struggling to find a happy medium

Between beautiful and acceptance

I truly have no freedom

And my individuality will keep its distance

I am different from the rest.

I am unique, original, imaginative.

This life puts me to the test

And conformity is active.

I believe the lies on TV

That this pill will make me appealing.

I’ve forgotten how to be free.

I’ve forgotten about healing.

Struggling to find a happy medium

Between beautiful and acceptance

I truly have no freedom

And my individuality will keep its distance

I’ve been taught to hide under a mask:

To cover up my flaws.

Putting on more makeup is a task

As I break my body’s laws.

My covered up beauty is stained

Through the world’s reckless brain.

How can one feel so drained

And think this is all to gain?

Struggling to find a happy medium

Between beautiful and acceptance

I truly have no freedom

And my individuality will keep its distance

I am forced to take comfort in the pain that’s inside me

As I skip this meal, take this pill, and step on the scale.

I believe the lies within the pages that are set free;

With every ad I am feeling nothing but frail.

I must look this way, act this way, not be me,

Sacrifice my health to my insecurities

So I can be the perfect model for society.

Why is that how it’s made out to be?

Struggling to find a happy medium

Between beautiful and acceptance

I truly have no freedom

And my individuality will keep its distance
