Shadow

A strangeness settled betwixt us
Its origins unknown, it’s advances subtle.

Words rolled off your tongue differently.
You chopped off your hair, screaming as it hit the floor.
An unnatural melody,
your whispers broke my heart.

I looked to you, hoping to see a flicker of your old self.
Sunken eye sockets greeted me coldly.
Words were never born.
Our pieces never fell into place.

But I’ll never stop following your shadow.
Hoping that maybe
just maybe
you’ll step out from behind it.
