Shadows

A shadow

Without form or purpose

Eternal void of nothingness

Unknown and feared

Forever present

Watching from the depths

Devouring us from within

Seen and heard, but not felt

Yet has the strongest grip

A child yells with a voice only his soul can hear

As he cries tears unseen

To the others who seem to be so close yet so far

While he is held back by forces unknown to him

And his shadow grows

A child watches on

As his mother crawls and lies down in pain

Trying to smile at him through her sickness

But he only can look past her

And see the faint glimpses of death

As his shadow grows

A child now sick

Looks at his reflection

After many tears of pain

With blurred sight

To see the same glimpses of death

That he saw many times before

And his shadow grows

The light from outstretched open hands

Of those to be friends

Invite him to what was once distance lands

And for once with all the time he spends

His smile isn’t pretend

The shadow shrinks

The rays of hope from a shining knight

Melts his frozen skin

Sharing his knowledge and might

He supports him

The shadow shrinks

The image he looks at is now a new reflection

Where he sees his mother's face

Her smile an objection

To the hardships she had to embrace

Filled with eternal affection

Now he smiles too in opposition

The shadow shrinks

A young man now looks forward

To the future that lies in front of him

Uncertain as the shadows envelops him

But he looks back to the past

The light fills him

And pushes back the dark

He walks forward hand in hand

With his shadow

I wanted to create a poem that stood out from the rest, easy enough to understand quickly, but also realistic so that people can hopefully find something they can relate to in it. It was hard to decide on a single point, and despite some parts being cut, I ultimately decided on having multiple layers to it. I feel like that part made it more understandable since everyone has to face loneliness, death, and the unknown at somepoint of their life. Everything in the poem is true though. When I was a kid, I was extremely socialy akward due to my autism, something I was aware of but didn't know how to deal with at that time. My mother had epilepsy among other health issues so she was in a lot of pain but seeing her fight through it is what gave me hope when I too would be diagnose with epilepsy durring high school. The shining knight bit is the remnants of a cut part that I decided to keep in honor of my step-father, someone who I can't give enough thanks for. The last two lines is to emphasize the point that the things we truely fear, will never go away but shouldn't hold you back. I really hope you enjoy or have enjoyed this.
