Sharing Soda and Cigarettes

Once two strangers became two friends,
over the course of summer’s night.
Wonder of what the future might
hold never crossed her young mind.

Two friends were so different and
yet always similar enough
to favor the other’s company.
She could conquer the world with him.

Comic books shared, night spent with zombies
on the tv screen. Horror from
video games taken away
with a shared mattress and shared rum.

Stale memories stab at feelings
that bring raw, cold tears. Numbing
everything innocently still.
Once two friends are now two strangers.
