She Couldn't (Atychiphobia)

I’m just me

And I’ll never be

A person that achieves

I’ll never be

a radiant somebody

Because I’m just me

I’m ordinary

Nothing special

I’m easily forgotten

And I’ll never be

Strong

I’ll always be

Hiding behind other people

And no matter how hard I work

I’m just me

The success that's supposed to come with hard work

skipped over me

Because I’m just-

Painfully ordinary

A pitiful dreamer

A naive little girl

Who, with stars in her eyes,

Thought that anything was possible

The failure stuck itself to her heart like tack

Sucking away her aspirations

How pathetic

I am-

I am just me

I look around

And all I see is

People who are something

People who are somebody

And I’m just me

And I’ll never be

One of them

So full of agony

So full that I’m empty

And soon nothing is inside me

But a soul pulling strings

My body moving like a robot

Stiff from the shackles

Plastering a fake smile on my lips, painted and a bit too perfect

And I just smile-

Because no one knows that it's not a smile

I wonder if they realize

That It’s a fake

I’m a fake

And I run away like a coward

Because that’s what I am

I’m just me

And I’ll never be

A someone who’s a somebody

Because really,

I’m just me

And I can only watch

As they jump higher than me

And I am stuck on the ground

And they don’t see me sinking down

I'm that one person In a crowd

You’ll forget me later

You won’t remember

Because I’m just me

I have a story

Lost in the midst of many other stories

Once upon a time

I thought I could be a someone

Who was a somebody

But I couldn’t-

Looking back and reading a poem from five years ago,

I realize how stupid I was.

In seventh grade, I thought that the world was unreachable.

As a senior in high school, I know who I am.

No matter how many times I was beaten down, from middle school to graduation, I always got back up. I always tried again.

That's not failure.

That's strength.

Within me, the fear of failure was prominent -- but I was more scared of not trying than failing.

So I tried again and again for my dreams --

And eventually, I stopped saying I couldn't,

Because I knew that I could.
