She Did the Best She Could

She did the best she could.
For her peers detested her and the adults believed she would be the one to change the world.
She tried to make herself happy,
But in the end she was just broken and alone.

They made promises that wouldn’t be kept.
They told her lies that would crush her spirit.
They chose others over her.
But she did the best she could.

He told the man one lie and destroyed her life.

She lost her brothers to the anger

One stopped loving her

But she did the best she could.

They said nothing would change.

They were best friends forever,

She never saw them again

But she did the best she could.

He told her he loved her.
She said they were just kids.
He left just like the others.
But she did the best she could.

He said the only difference would be him not sitting at that desk.
She saw him twice after that.
He saw the other one once a week.
But she did the best she could.

Nobody saw the tears in her eyes that night.
Nobody noticed the dark circles around her eyes.
But mostly nobody noticed that no matter what happened,
She did the best she could.

It took her 3 years to realize that her best wasn’t enough.

It took years of heartbreak and pain to see that she could be better.

It took that one person to push her away for her to open her eyes.

She pushed herself to be more.

Never did she think she would be so happy.

Never did she imagine that she would be so confident.

Never did she imagine herself being so strong.

Never did she believe that she could be more than loneliness and depression

Never did she imagine that her best would be more than keeping a smile on her face.

She rid herself of childish dreams and beliefs.

She threw away all the keepsakes and burned all the letters.

She found people who appreciated her and weren’t afraid to call her out.

She found someone who never let her forget and never let her regret her past.

She became the type of person that she could look at and say,

“This is the best I’ve ever been, but not the best I’ll ever be”
