As She Talks To Angels - This is a Letter to Her Boys
If love was inherently easy
We'd have no need to explain divorce
Makes sense, right?
Just not the person you were meant to love.
Oops, my mistake.
And everybody packs up and moves on.
But what about other love?
Self-love
Mother-Child love
Best friend love
Picks up books for the fallen stranger in the hallway love
We box up love like a wondrous gift
And dont get me wrong - it absolutely is.
But havent ou ever once opened a beautiful gift and thought
"Holy Fuck...What do I...?"
"How do I...?"
"Man, I was not prepared for this."
But you look at it
In it's shiny gift wrapping
And all the people at the party are staring at you
Like you've just been handed the baby Jesus, himself
So what do you do?
You try to love it anyway
Even when you dont know how
Sometimes we love what we didnt know was fragile
A little too strong
Sometimes we love them in all the wrong ways
Like trying to comb your hair with your toothbrush
And other times we honestly dont know what the hell to do
Or even where to start loving
But we know we want to
And we knew this beautiful gift we've been given deserves it.
Maybe she just didnt know how.
You see, as it turns out
She never mentioned the word addiction
In certain company
But she left the world behind
Her whole world.
For company where she could - talking to angels.
All I could think was look at everything she threw away.
If she truly loved them...
But I realize now the girl did nothing but love
Perhaps she just didnt always know how.
She was handed two precious gifts
And took one look at them and said, "I have no idea what I'm doing"
But Im going to give it all I got
Because Im looking at the most beautiful thing this life will ever grant me
But the fact of the matter is
That other parts of life weren't as easy to love.
Life makes love hard to give but baby, she tried.
"She kept a lock of hair in her pocket
She wore a cross around her neck.
They say the hair is from a little boy
The cross is from someone she had not met
Not yet"
But one should know that the greatest angels she ever spoke to were the ones she rocked to sleep at night,
The ones she kissed goodnight,
The ones she taught about women, life, and love.
Boys, make no mistake,
Love is a hard concept.
One that is not as simple as we pretend it is.
But when your mother looked at you,
She knew love was all you needed.
And she gave all she could
In a mixed up world like ours.
