She Wears Her Snakes on Her Head

She wears her snakes on her head
Along with sunglasses and a ribbon.
You won’t find her too easily;
Medusa likes to stay hidden.

Hidden inside of the shadows
Of empty alleys and streets
She watches the men that are passing,
Listens to the sound of their feet.

She protects the women around her,
She guides them home with her light
And defends from the men that surround her
Because she walks alone in the night.

Too often she’s heard of the stories
Whenever she watches the news
Of women and girls endangered
And coming home tattered and bruised

She’s made it her goal to be ready
Whatever the problem should be
With every whistle and catcall
She readies and confronts the beast.

“What are you doing, my darling?”
She says with a whimsical voice
Her forked tongue escapes her scowl
As the creep makes a terrible choice

“What does it look like, old lady?”
He then steps close to the girl.
He grabs her from behind and she pales,
Earning from Medusa a snarl.

The girl pushes and takes a step backward
As Medusa shrugs and she sighs.
To the girl she speaks softly.
“My angel, do close your eyes.”

It’s over before he can make sense
Of what chaos is soon to be shown.
Medusa’s glasses drop to the pavement
And the man’s body hardens to stone.

She hides in the shadows just watching
Waiting for her moment to strike
Using her gifts to do justice
For the ones too weak to fight.

She wears her snakes on her head
And her heart, she wears on her sleeve.
Medusa guards the defenseless
And she will until she should leave.
