Shedding
Sometimes relationships seem like a game.
Who can care least? Want to play?
Because caring means weakness and weakness means ruin
Not love but a war of attrition.
So I slowly built a rocky skin,
That grew thicker with every heartbreak
Ignored to the point of being invisible,
So how did you manage to see it?
Shedding that rocky skin is torture
My heart doesn’t want to be vulnerable
So I lash out and say things that shock even myself
Yet still you stay by my side?
Though you aren’t the first to say you’ll love me forever,
You’re the first one I really believed
And when sometimes I’m scared and seek out that old armor
I find it’s just you that I need.
Wrapped in your arms I feel nothing,
Could ever be wrong in this world
And the old me can barely believe it,
I doubt this can be how I feel.
But every morning you wake up beside me and the look in your eyes says it’s real.
