Shoes


I saw a shoe that forced Her heel above her toes sticking Out like painful rubies. The curve Of the arch and the sharp, upright point Like an exclamation mark hid The monstrosity of the vise. What elegant shoes, they said, And she smiled with Relief and walked jauntily on.

It makes me think of both high heels and foot binding (an old Chinese practice). Powerful words in a short poem!
