The Shortie Has Entered

My heart beats fast as I walk down the halls

How in the world can I manage to survive in a place like this?

I feel drowned in a sea of students…

Like an insignificant, miniscule part of a more significant whole

“I can’t…this is too hard,” is all that flows through my head

How is it possible for any of these people…

People who are supposedly enrolled here…

People who say they are the same age…

People who have facial hair and wear stiletto heels to school..,

How can these people be my fellow students…my fellow peers?

Just last year, I was in Middle School

In halls not as big and not as scary

With students I’ve known all my life

With friends all the same height

This was NOT middle school

This was something else…something worse

This was High School

The first days were hard…really hard

Teachers no longer held my hand

And scorned at the motto of helping me each step of the way

Instead they threw you out, giving you no choice but to fend for yourself

Yup…this was definitely High School

Kids were meaner…or just meaner looking

They were definitely taller…at least to me they seemed like it

And true friends were harder to come by

But they did come…my true friends

They make high school manageable

And make me feel “bigger” than I actually am

They make me feel less insignificant and more wholesome

Where were these guys on my first days here?

Three years and 24 classes later, High School is still hard

But…not as hard as before

I don’t feel lost anymore and feel more “settled”

Fending for my poor soul has become easier

And High School has even become somewhat…enjoyable

Poor freshman self…I wish you could see us now

Oh how we have grown

Not physically of course…

We’re still the same 5 feet we were in middle school

But we have matured in other ways,

And have learned to survive in this cringe worthy place we call…

High School
