Should I?

Should I go gentle into that good night?

The night of no light,  no paths, no beginning or end

The day in which I walk is so cold yet so hot,  so broken yet so fixed

I can find no comfort, yet I am too comfortable

The guilt, the memories, the inspiration

Pushing me through the light, further than my body permits

I am tired and yearn to sleep in that good night

That night of ignorance and bliss, of peace and silence

I, who is burdened by your blessing, ask again,

Should I go gentle into that good night?

But I can’t, for you are watching me

Watching me grow, slip, grieve, learn

You as my audience has forced me past everything

Past my limits, past my mistakes, past my weariness

You never let go, my dear friends and family

If you won’t cease your support, I won’t cease in my journey

You did not quit on me, I won’t quit on you

Every step I take is for you, every beat of my heart is because of you

You are with me always, and I with you

Thou art I... And I am Thou

Even though you yourselves are sleeping in that good night, You awaken me

The blight of Cancer has taken you all

But it can never touch your souls and teachings

When the immorality and irrationality I confront challenge my being,

Your morals and spirits shall guard me

Uncle Junior, your generosity and friendliness, will be mine

Nina and Nino, your love and resolve, will be mine

Uncle Bill, your happiness and virtue, will be mine

Uncle John, your service and honor, will be mine

Titus, your loyalty and bravery, will be mine

Grampa Fred, your courage and altruism, will be mine

And you, the precious and mysterious Darla

The one whose spark started the flame

Your compassion and love, will be mine

With you, I will not falter on my path

I can be the servant of man, the protector of potential, the student of knowledge

I can endure and prosper in times of drought and famine

I can live in confidence and assurance when the ground beneath me is giving way

I can protect the ones I adore, the ones you adored

I can fortify the next generation's future and growth

Even though my body is weak, my mind lost, and my life fading

My borrowed spirit will survive and continue on

So, once more, I ask again

Should I go gentle into that Good Night?

The Good Night where you dwell and rest

No, not yet

I am not done

Although I crave to be in your presence once again

There is still work to be done

One day I'll see you again

Ask you all the questions I have

Be at peace with you

But not today

Today I work
