Silence
In today’s society,
It’s easy to get caught up
In the fashion and fortune
That the media endlessly portrays.
We constantly want to present ourselves
So that others will think highly of us.
Putting on a façade
So that others will only see what we think they want.
But in reality,
Individuality is more important
Than the opinions of other people
Who know just as little as the rest.
Why do we try so hard
To become copies of each other,
Destroying who we really are
In order to fit in?
I am guilty of this, too.
When I am around others,
I filter my thoughts.
I do not allow them to know
What is going on inside of my head.
However, in reality,
My mind races with contemplations,
Swirling with imagination,
Analyzing and pondering everything I see around me.
This is a gift and curse,
For this constant thinking can lead to worry.
I am a bottled up case of stress,
For I overthink and overanalyze incessantly.
I am a sensitive soul,
Emotions control my every move.
Powerful enough to drive me insane,
Far too often, I fear.
Music helps me calm those emotions,
The beat being that my heart beats to,
The lyrics being the words I speak,
The melody being that I harmonize to.
I am everything I hide.
I am nothing that I expose.
I am the only version of myself.
I am I.
